North Cameroon looking for investors to develop rice cultivation

Investing in Central Africa: A notice of expression of interest for domestic and foreign investors who wish to exploit developed agricultural land for rice production in the department of Logone and Charihas just been released by the Cameroonian government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Minader).

According to the announcement published on 5 December by Minader, the project is to be built on an area of over 10,000 hectares, out of 13,102 hectares developed for the needs of the cause in the district of:

  • Zina (6,521 ha),
  • Makary (411 ha),
  • Logone Birni (970 ha).

As for the Mora area, there are the localities of:

  • Goulfey,
  • Moulouang,
  • Hilél
  • Goulfey Gana.

The project is expected to cover 2,200 ha.

For the government of Cameroon, we are in the right direction to increase rice production in the northern part of the country. This production rarely exceeds 100,000 tonnes produced by the Yagoua Rice Expansion and Modernisation Company, Semry.

It should also be noted that this is an invitation to invest at a time when Cameroon is struggling with food imports, foreign imports weigh down the country's trade balance because rice is one of its main products.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Trade, between 2015 and 2017, rice imports cost Cameroon FCFA 508.5 billion.
