The only African state that has neither signed nor ratified the agreement is the<a title=\"Eritrea\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eritrea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eritrea<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The treaty provides for zero tariffs on 90 per cent of goods crossing the borders of signatory states.<\/strong> Also included are the&nbsp;<strong>services<\/strong>which is crucial since they accounted for 53 per cent of the continent's GDP in 2017, says the United nations economic commission for Africa (Uneca). In this transitional phase, duties will only remain in place on a limited number of economic sectors deemed particularly sensitive to national interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that such a radical change cannot happen overnight, there is a five-year buffer period, which can be extended by the most fragile economies. As the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispionline.it\/it\/pubblicazione\/lafrica-si-apre-anche-se-stessa-23352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ispi (Institute for International Policy Studies)<\/a>, this is the first step of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\"a longer journey <a href=\"https:\/\/aedic.eu\/en\/invest-in-africa\/beac-predicts-that-prices-of-metals-and-agricultural-products-exported-from-cemac-countries-will-increase-in-2020\/\">which provides<\/a> as subsequent stages, in the not yet near future, the customs and monetary union'.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The basic idea behind the free trade area is to lay the foundations for African countries to start creating added value, i.e. to process the raw materials they are rich in, to <strong>equip themselves with processing facilities for agricultural products, for example.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aedic.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/un-ECA-economic-commision-for-africa-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"an ECA economic commission for africa\" class=\"wp-image-10560\" title=\"\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And all this will lead to greater prosperity and create millions of jobs. <strong>The free trade area has the power to trigger this process.<\/strong> This is a long process, which will not be over in a short time and which will have to be accompanied by infrastructure and implementation of what is currently only on paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uneca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA<\/a><\/strong>) estimated that, by 2022, the agreement would increase the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aedic.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/david-luke-african-trade-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"david luke african trade\" class=\"wp-image-10561\" title=\"\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aedic.eu\/en\/invest-in-camerun\/the-ministry-of-trade-in-cameroon-supports-aedic-association\/\">intra-African trade of the<\/a> 52 per cent. Last 22 December, in Addis Ababa, <strong>David Luke took the floor<\/strong>, coordinator of the<a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.uneca.org\/atpc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC)<\/a>&nbsp;of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\"AfCFTA should work as it is the only route <a href=\"https:\/\/aedic.eu\/en\/invest-in-africa\/development-of-catene-value-gives-33-billion-francs-cfa-to-cameroon\/\">of the continent towards development<\/a> sustainable. Let us not underestimate the importance of this initiative. href=\"https:\/\/aedic.eu\/en\/working-in-africa\/growing-in-investments-in-camerun-stadiums-and-hotels\/\">investments<\/a> by foreign investors could turn into and become 4,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The goal of this huge project that has just begun is ambitious: the creation of millions of new jobs that would benefit young people and
