Cameroon Fra' Giacomo Dalla Torre of the Temple of Sanguinetto Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta visits President Paul Biya

The Head of State and the Grand Master Fra 'Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto reviewed 57 years of bilateral cooperation and agreed to raise cooperation to a higher level to bring humanitarian aid.

The Order of Malta runs a modern hospital in Cameroon, the St John of Malta Hospital in Njombéin the coastal region, which was visited by the Grand Master.

The Head of State and his distinguished guest agreed that it is necessary to continue supporting this state-of-the-art hospital to enable him to strengthen his interventions towards the Cameroonian population.

In the humanitarian field, Cameroon relies on the moral authority of the Sovereign Order of Malta at international level to mobilise the necessary support for the management of refugees and displaced populations.

Visiting on 18 July, the Gado-Badzéré refugee camp, in the eastern region, a visit to a camp for Central African refugees run by the UNHCR (UN High Commissioner for Refugees) in eastern Cameroon, on the border with Central Africa, country where inter-ethnic and inter-confessional violence has driven more than 400,000 people to flee and seek refuge in Cameroon.

The Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta was honoured and awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Valour by the Head of State.

Cameroon, emphasised President Paul Biya, is a land of welcome for foreign nationals in need and to touch upon the legendary hospitality and humanist spirit of the Cameroonian people. For this reason, Cameroon deserves more international support

The Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta was honoured and awarded by the Head of State of the Grand Cross of the Order of Valour.

Mrs Chantal BIYA also received a magnificent gift from the Grand Master: a prayer rosary.

Immediately after visiting President Paul Biya in the afternoon, the Grand Master went to Youndé University 1.

Here, during a ceremony held in the presence of over 700 teachers and students, was awarded an honorary degree in Classical Literature and Philosophy for 'his work in these fields of study and for his humanitarian commitment'.

In his speech, the Grand Master emphasised that:

"classical culture has always been a privileged vehicle to read the present and to understand that the achievements of mankind are not definitive, but we need to watch over and analyse what we have achieved throughout history in order to grow and form ourselves as citizens, endowed with a critical spirit, aware of our rights and duties "
